Robert Duvall, the iconic Hollywood actor who received an Oscar for his performance in Tender Mercies, has died. He was 95.

His wife Luciana Pedraza confirmed the news in a statement shared Monday, February 16, to his official Facebook page.

“Yesterday we said goodbye to my beloved husband, cherished friend, and one of the greatest actors of our time,” the statement read. “Bob passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by love and comfort.”

“To the world, he was an Academy Award-winning actor, a director, a storyteller,” the statement continued. “To me, he was simply everything. His passion for his craft was matched only by his deep love for characters, a great meal, and holding court.”

“For each of his many roles, Bob gave everything to his characters and to the truth of the human spirit they represented,” Luciana wrote. “In doing so, he leaves something lasting and unforgettable to us all. Thank you for the years of support you showed Bob and for giving us this time and privacy to celebrate the memories he leaves behind.”

Duvall, whose first major success was playing Tom Hagen in The Godfather (for which he received an Academy Award nomination) and The Godfather Part II, was also Oscar-nominated for his work in Apocalypse Now, The Great Santini, The Apostle, A Civil Action and The Judge.

In his personal life, he was married three other times: to Barbara Brent from 1964 to 1981, to Gail Youngs from 1982 to 1986 and to Sharon Brophy from 1991 to 1995.

He does not have any children.
