Classic TV Dramas ‘Copper’ & ‘Cedar Cove’ Find New Homes
EXCLUSIVE: Copper and Cedar Cove have proved their staying power, with both vintage TV dramas finding new homes.
British channels group UKTV has snagged Copper for its streaming service U. Set in 1860s New York City, the series was created by Barry Levinson, Tom Fontana and Will Rokos. It proved popular on BBC America in the U.S. The show follows a tough police detective, Kevin Corcoran (Tom Weston-Jones) who returns from war to find his wife missing and his daughter dead. He divides his time between working cases and trying to piece together what happened to his family.
The series was BBC America’s first original drama. While there was talk of a Copper movie when the drama ended after two seasons and 23 episodes, it never materialized. Cineflix and Shaw produced the scripted series.
Cedar Cove starring Andie MacDowell, meanwhile, recently topped 400,000 views on YouTube in German-speaking territories. It has now been sold into Central and Eastern Europe, with commercial net TV2 picking it up for Hungary. Based on the Debbie Macomber´s best-selling novels, the show was made by Unity Pictures for Hallmark Channel in the U.S.
Germany-based Beta sells Copper and Cedar Cove internationally and sealed the deals. The producer-distributor also said it has sealed several other European agreements for its catalog dramas.
German crime TV movie series Big Ben has been acquired by free-to-air broadcaster Prima TV for the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Elsewhere, the long-running series The Call of the Mountain, about an alpine doctor, has been snagged by JOJ for Slovakia and by the AXN White channel for pay TV in Slovakia and the Czech Republic.
