Sexy, Flattering Swimsuits For Women Over 40 (That Aren’t Boring)

Swimsuit shopping can be an absolute beat down.

After 40 or 50, when your body is changing through perimenopause and menopause, it can feel even more defeating.

But here’s the thing — you don’t have to settle. Not even a little.

I’ve tried on hundreds of swimsuits and I’m only sharing the best of the best — the ones that stay put, support you, and make you walk out onto that beach feeling like the confident, sexy woman you are.

#1 | L’AGENCE Natalya Collared One Piece

Okay, this one-piece? Let’s just say it’s an instant confidence booster. The color-blocking is genius — that white line down the front center makes the body look slimmer and draws the eye up towards your chest and face. The fabric is soft and stretchy, so you will not be pulling or tugging all day.

And — maybe I buried the lead — full bum coverage. Almost a novelty in today’s suits. 😄

Luxe-looking, next-level comfortable, and it just makes you feel good. Which is exactly what a great swimsuit is supposed to do.

Want to tackle looking slimmer in dresses next? It comes down to strategy and silhouette.

#2 | Staud Black & White One-Piece

Okay, if you’ve been around here for a while, you’ve definitely seen this STAUD one-piece make an appearance — multiple vacations, multiple times, zero regrets. It’s just solid.

I’m pretty boxy, so I like to find one-pieces that create the illusion of curves.

The side cutouts on this suit definitely make it look like I have more of a waist.

The black-and-white color combo is a classic — that makes finding matching cover-up’s a breeze. The bum coverage isn’t quite as robust as the L’Agence suit, but still very good, especially in comparison to most modern suits.

I’ve worn this snorkeling, swimming, and even scuba diving without incident. That kind of confidence? That’s everything when you’re on vacation.

#3 | Free People Black & White One-Piece

Let me start here: I wore this suit on a week-long river rafting and camping trip in Idaho — kayaking, white water rafting, swimming in current, surrounded by people. And this Free People suit? It understood the assignment.

Never tugged. Never pulled. Never adjusted. It just stayed put.

The white tie-waist and halter neckline are elegant and do a lot of work — creating shape and making your waist look noticeably smaller. That crisscross belt is doing serious heavy lifting.

Throw on some black wide-leg cotton pants, grab your glam sunhat and sunglasses, and you have the perfect sophisticated beach look. It’ll take you everywhere from the Salmon River to someone’s yacht. (I’m available and open to invites. 😉)

One fit note: this one runs a bit snug — which is actually part of why it doesn’t move.

#4 | Gigi C Surf Suit

This might be one of the most unique and chic swimsuits I’ve ever owned. If you want a swim-safe, Bond Girl–vibe suit you can actually snorkel or scuba dive in — you’re going to love this.

I wore it while training for my open water scuba certification in Honduras, and it was perfect. The zip front feels incredibly secure, the bum coverage is great, and the long sleeves offer real protection from the sun and elements — especially when you’re in the water for hours. (I trained in pretty chilly water and was genuinely grateful for the extra coverage. Dark fabric + sun = a little extra warmth when you need it.)

Sporty and sexy. The faux-leather fabric and subtle cutout details take it somewhere really special — functional, flattering, and seriously cool.

This one’s a keeper.

#5 | L’AGENCE High-Waist Bikini Bottoms & Top

Can we just settle this once and for all? Yes, you can absolutely wear a bikini after 40. And this one? It’s going to make you want to.

This bikini is gorgeous, modern, and has a chic retro vibe that I love.

The high-waisted bottoms give you that amazing tummy coverage without feeling frumpy or overly conservative. And the design details are just so good. The gold buttons, the textured fabric, the color-blocking… it all comes together in a way that feels really intentional and chic.

Now, fair warning — it just came back in stock but it’s already sold out in some sizes, which is not surprising. So I’ve linked a few different places to shop it below to give you the best shot at finding your size. If you’re thinking about this one, I wouldn’t wait.

#6 | TA3 Miracle Sculpting Swimsuit

Let’s talk about this viral swimsuit—aka the one I’ve been calling magic. I have never been this excited about a swimsuit. It literally shaves inches off the waist and creates an unbelievable hourglass shape.

Keep in mind, I have a boxy, body type, and somehow this suit makes me look like Kim Kardashian. (Okay, maybe that’s a stretch—but you get the idea!)

Here’s what’s actually happening under the hood: built-in shapewear that smooths, sculpts, and supports in all the right places. A corset tie in the back — think old-school Victorian with a modern twist — that really exaggerates your curves. The medium-cut leg and cheeky bum coverage hit that perfect sweet spot. Not too much, not too little.

And if you’re more well-endowed up top, this one has you covered — literally. The ultra-supportive shelf bra with removable bust pads supports up to an H cup. That’s rare. And so necessary.

This is the swimsuit that does the most — and I mean that in the absolute best way. If you’ve been on the fence about trying something new this season, let this be the one.

You can thank me later.

Color-blocking is like the David Copperfield of fashion, it IS magic. You can find more simple, strategic color-blocking tips to look slimmer here.

#7 | Maygel Coronel White Ruffle One-Shoulder One-Piece

This one is delivering pure glamour.

The dramatic ruffle adds instant elegance while doing something really clever — it draws the eye inward to create the illusion of a waist. The one-shoulder neckline is incredibly flattering if you have broader shoulders, and that same ruffle adds volume if you’re smaller up top. Smart design all around.

One thing worth knowing: the white runs a bit sheer, while the black is more flattering and forgiving in the tummy area. Worth keeping in mind when you’re choosing your color.

The bum coverage isn’t as full as some of the suits above, but it’s enough to feel comfortable and confident. And here’s something I love — it’s made with stretchy, one-size-fits-most fabric, so no sizing stress. The brand says it fits sizes 2–10.

#8 | Agua Bendita Bikini Top & Bottoms

Last on my list of flattering swimsuits is a bit of a wildcard—but one I absolutely love.

Yes, dark colors are slimming, and yes, black is always a safe bet. But sometimes you’re standing on a beach in the tropics and you just want to wear beautiful colors.

This bold bikini by Agua Bendita feels elevated, elegant, and just the right amount of playful. It’s such a chic way to add color to your beach capsule without going over the top.

The high-waisted bottoms are also reversible—so you can match the floral top or switch it up with a deeper blue for a slightly different look. Either way, it’s a gorgeous set that instantly makes me want to pack a bag… even if I don’t have a trip booked (yet!).

My exact top is sold out, but I’m linking a very similar style below so you can still get the look.

If you have a larger bust and struggle to find flattering tops, make sure you read this post next.

Flattering Swimsuit Shopping Checklist

Here’s a quick checklist of what I always look for when I’m searching for a flattering, confidence-boosting swimsuit:

✔️ Waist-Defining Details
Look for ruching, belts, color-blocking, or cutouts that create the illusion of a waist.

✔️ Built-in Support
Whether it’s a shelf bra, underwire, or thicker straps—support in the bust makes all the difference.

✔️ Strategic Coverage
Fuller bum coverage, higher-rise bottoms, or one-pieces with structure can help you feel secure and polished.

✔️ High-Quality Fabric
Compression, stretch, and lined material can help smooth and sculpt without feeling restrictive.
