Even Superman Has a Baby Mullet Now

It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s David Corenswet’s Superman with a … baby mullet? Filming has started for Man of Tomorrow, the sequel to James Gunn’s 2025 Superman, and Corenswet is once again donning the cape and red undies. Recently published behind-the-scenes shots of the sequel—which is currently filming in Atlanta—seem to tease quite the spectacle for the 2027 film.

The photos hint at a beatdown between Superman and arch-nemesis Lex Luthor, played by a bald-headed Nicholas Hoult. This go-around, Hoult’s Luthor seems to have upgraded his business casual look for something more fight-ready, donning the villain’s iconic warsuit from the comics. Superman’s outfit looks pretty much identical to his duds from the first film, with one small upgrade: His hair. It appears that our hero is in the early stages of growing out a mullet.

Baby mullets have found their way atop the heads of many guys these days, from musicians to actors to that guy who works in fashion that you keep running into at the bar. And these photos prove that even fictional characters aren’t immune to it.

Now, don’t think this is some psyop to get Dimes Square denizens into seats when Man of Tomorrow comes out. Superman with a mullet has its roots in the comics, famously appearing in 1993 during the “Reign of the Supermen” storyline that followed the “Death of Superman” arc. The nape-grazing locks had their time to shine for three years, and they nearly made their on-screen debut in the nixed Tim Burton Superman film from 1998 that would’ve seen Nicholas Cage in the leading role. A CGI version of Cage’s Superman made a cameo in the 2023 The Flash, which was panned for falling into the uncanny valley, but a very-real Corenswet seems to be bearing the mulleted torch.

Gunn’s status as a certified comic book nerd has us thinking he knows exactly what he’s doing with Superman’s mane and that he might just take a page (or two) from the comics for Man of Tomorrow. After all, the director has a reputation for adhering to the lore, down to the very last hair follicle.
