Doja Cat is speaking out about pop music and her new music.
The 29-year-old rapper and singer previously said she was done with pop music in a 2023 tweet, and even agreed with people saying her rap verses were “mid and corny.”

“Where I am creatively right now is based in where I was,” she told V magazine. “I want to kind of swim back upstream, so to speak, and go back where I was, and just re-trim and evolve everything.”
“I do want to be self-aware enough to admit the fact that this is a pop-driven project,” Doja added of her new album. “I know that I can make pop music, and pop is just that it’s popular. It starts to become a bit of a thing that’s viewed as a sport by people who are just bystanders to it, who enjoy it, but maybe also don’t respect it or what it is, which is just music. There are some people who don’t see it as music. They see it as if this is some kind of football for girls and gays.”
Of the sound, Doja reveals she tapped into the 80s for the new album, and it’s more rapping than singing.
“There’s something that almost brings me back to a happy place when I see it now,” she told the mag. “I wanted to play with that nostalgia by using these Lo-Fi sounds and samples and things that reminded you of something from your childhood, but it wasn’t on the nose ‘80s.”
“Sometimes I’m surprised by what I can do now, because I could not f–king sing,” she continued, adding, “I have a lot more knowledge of how to use my voice as an instrument, more than I ever have in my life.”
Earlier this year, Doja was featured on three songs – “Lose My Mind” with Don Toliver for the F1 movie soundtrack, and “Just Us” with Jack Harlow, and “Born Again” with LISA and Raye.
