James Cameron Gives Update On Directing 'Avatar' 4 & 5 After Previously Saying He Might Pass Them On
James Cameron is opening up about his future with the Avatar franchise!
The soon-to-be 71-year-old filmmaker started developing the first movie in the mid-1990s, but it didn’t go into production until April 2007, with the movie being released in late 2009.
Now, a second movie was released 13 years later, and the third, Avatar: Fire and Ash, is coming out in December 2025, with fourth and fifth movies in the works as well.
Previously, James said he might step away from directing Avatar 4 and 5 as they are “all-consuming” and he has other projects he’s interesting in doing. Now, he’s sharing an update on if he’ll direct the next movies.

“I mean, there’s no reason not to [direct them]. I’m healthy, I’m good to go,” he told Empire in a new interview.
He added that there could be other factors that cause him unable to do that.
“I’m not going to rule it out,” he says. “I mean, I’ve got to make it in a vigorous way, to handle the kind of volume and energy of the work for another six or seven years. You know what I mean? I might not be able to do that… [but] if I can, I’ll just do it.”
In another interview, James revealed Avatar could even go beyond five movies!
“We’re fully written through movie five, and I’ve got ideas for six and seven, although I’ll probably be handing the baton on at that point,” he told People. “I mean, mortality catches up. But I mean, we’re enjoying what we’re doing. We’re loving it. We get to work with great people.”
In fact, some filming has already taken place on four and five, as some scenes were filmed alongside three and four!
