‘A Minecraft Movie’ Gets Max Streaming Release Date

No need to exit out of creative mode just yet — “A Minecraft Movie” has set a Max streaming date for June 20.

Based on the sandbox “Minecraft” game that was first developed by Sweden’s Mojang Studios in 2011, “A Minecraft Movie” stars four misfits — played by the likes of Jason Momoa, Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks and Sebastian Hansen — who get sucked into the Overworld. They enlist the help of a handy crafted named Steve, played by Jack Black, to survive.

“A Minecraft Movie” had a record-breaking $163 million domestic and $150 million international opening, making for a total $313 million global launch. At the time, it was the best opening weekend of 2025 and the highest opening weekend for a video game adaptation. The film has earned $951 million worldwide in theaters. Warner Bros. film heads Michael de Luca and Pam Abdy called “Minecraft” a “world-class achievement” in a memo to staff after its blockbuster opening.

Despite the film receiving overall mixed reviews from critics (47% on Rotten Tomatoes), the film still managed to draw in families and young kids. David A. Gross, who runs the consulting firm FranchiseRe movie, told Variety: “Reviews are not good, but these pictures are made for moviegoers, not critics. When a release catches fire like this, it generates its own momentum and you can set aside all projections.”
