The murder of Meredith Kercher
Meredith Kercher was a British exchange student who shared a four-bedroom apartment with Amanda Knox and two Italian roommates.
She was found dead on the floor of her bedroom on the morning of November 2, 2007. Amanda had spent the night at her boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito‘s apartment and arrived home to find the front door open. There were drops of blood in the bathroom that she shared with Meredith and she found feces in the toilet.
Amanda initially thought the blood could have been from her roommate cutting herself while shaving or from menstruating, but the feces alarmed her and made her think someone had been in the apartment. She called Raffaele for help and he arrived to discover that there was a broken window in roommate Filomena Romanelli‘s bedroom.
The cops were called, but other cops who were investigating a lost phone had already arrived at the scene. When Filomena arrived home to see what happened, she instructed those police officers to open Meredith‘s locked bedroom door, but they refused. Filomena‘s friends forced the door open and Meredith‘s body was found lying on the floor, covered by a blanket.
The investigation into Amanda Knox
As seen in the first two episodes of the Hulu series, the investigators immediately suspected that Amanda was involved in the crime and she was told that she is the most important witness.
Despite her mother’s wishes that she leave Italy and go back to the United States, Amanda decided to stay in town and assist with the investigation. There was a clear language barrier between her and the police staff. Days after the murder, a long night of questioning and difficulties in translating led Amanda to implicate herself in the crime, as well as her boss at a restaurant, Patrick Lumumba. In later testimony, she claimed that she was pressured and hit by police in order to compel her to incriminate herself.
Amanda, Raffaele, and Patrick were all arrested on November 6.
Rudy Guede discovered to be the killer
Rudy Guede, a man who was friends with the guys who lived in the apartment below, was discovered to be the killer. He had met Meredith and Amanda just days before the murder.
Rudy‘s fingerprints were found at the scene of the crime and he was arrested on November 20. Patrick was released upon his arrest, but not Amanda or Raffaele.
Rudy admitted to being at the apartment when Meredith was murdered, but tried to claim that someone else was there and committed the crime. He also claimed that he heard Amanda arguing with Meredith and that he saw her silhouette outside of the house.
He was found guilty of the sexual assault and murder of Meredith Kercher and sentenced to 30 years imprisonment.
After Amanda and Raffaele were also convicted, he got his sentence reduced to 16 years.
Rudy was released from prison on November 12, 2021 after serving 13 years of prison time.
Amanda spent four years in prison before finally being released
Amanda and Raffaele were both charged with the murder of Meredith as well.
The prosecution suggested that Amanda and Raffaele had taunted Meredith and tried to get her to be sexually active with Rudy. They also claimed that Amanda cut her with the knife.
Amanda was sentenced to 26 years in prison. Raffaele was sentenced to 25 years in prison.
They were both acquitted on October 3, 2011. In their official report overturning the convictions, the appeal trial judges explained that the original guilty verdict “was not corroborated by any objective evidence.” They went on to describe Amanda’s police interrogations as being of “obsessive duration,” adding that the statements she gave implicating herself and Patrick were the result of confusion while she was under “great psychological pressure.”
Amanda‘s slander charge for implicating Patrick in the crime was upheld.
Italy’s highest court ended the case by ruling Amanda and Raffaele innocent of murder on March 27, 2015.
Raffaele Sollecito is also a free man now (pictured in 2007 and 2011)
Raffaele Sollecito never actually turned against Amanda, as the police tried to claim to her (seen in the series).
After being released from prison in 2011 and acquitted of the murder in 2015, Raffaele went on to become a software engineer specializing in cloud and hybrid architectures.
Raffaele has a bachelor’s degree from University of Perugia and a master’s degree from University of Verona.
Amanda and Raffaele reunited at the premiere of the Hulu series!
A very famous star backed out of playing Amanda in the series due to scheduling conflicts.
