How Dare You: ‘America’s Next Top Model’ Docuseries Is A Runway Hit For Netflix

America’s Next Top Model hasn’t been on since 2018 but Netflix’s recent docuseries about the Tyra Banks-led reality series has been dominating headlines over the last few weeks.

Turns out Netflix viewers are interested as Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model landed at number one in the streamer’s Top 10 English TV List with 14.2M views in its first week.

The three-part series, which was directed by Mor Loushy and Daniel Sivan, beat the launch of Season 3 of The Night Agent and Season 4 of Bridgerton in its debut.

It marks the latest docuseries hit for Netflix, which pulled in huge numbers for its 50 Cent-produced series Sean Combs: The Reckoning, which launched with 21.8M views last year, helping it become one of the top performing shows of the year.

That bodes well for both Inside America’s Next Top Model and the potential Reality Check strand. Netflix has leant into these strands such as Joe Berlinger’s Conversations with a Killer, Trainwreck and Turning Point, so it could well become a name for more outlandish reality TV stories.

The series is a look at the 2000s reality TV phenomenon about aspiring models living and competing together, highlighting its many controversial moments. It includes an interview with Banks, whose ‘How Dare You’ catchphrase has become a meme, as well as former contestants, winners, and judges.

The series unpacks some of the UPN/CW/VH1 reality show’s controversies, including Shandi Sullivan’s onscreen sexual assault, multiple instances of blackface and Banks’ infamous “we were all rooting for you” outburst at Tiffany Richardson.

While ANTM’s past models and judges have been commended for opening up on the Netflix docuseries, many online feel that Banks did not fully take responsibility for her past actions and behavior.

Elsewhere in docuseries, Being Gordon Ramsay debuted at number ten with 2.7M views. The six-part series follows the chef as he juggles family life and the simultaneous launch of his biggest venture to date: five restaurants in one of London’s tallest buildings, 22 Bishopsgate.

However, unlike Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model, Ramsay is an exec producer of the series, which was made by his Fox-backed production company Studio Ramsay Global.
