The difference is often subtle but so impactful.

After nearly 13 years of blogging and years of styling women one-on-one, here’s what I know… you don’t need a different body. You don’t need to lose the weight right away to feel confident. You simply need a different styling strategy.

Tip #1 – Add a Belt

Here’s something I see all the time — women reaching for big, billowy dresses because they want to cover up. I get the temptation, but here’s the thing: oversized styles with no shape can actually make you look larger, not smaller. The fix? Just add a belt.

You can really see the difference in the side by side images above — even the black dress I’m wearing, which already has a defined waist, gets a whole new level of waist-cinching impact with a belt added.

A belt instantly highlights and defines the waist and creates a more feminine shape. And when you’re shopping, look for dresses with a tie waist or cinched waist detail built right in — same beautiful effect, no belt required.


Tip #2 – Vertical Lines

When it comes to prints, direction matters. Vertical lines elongate and slim, while horizontal lines add width — so if you’re choosing between the two, vertical wins every time.

The chic, casual shirt-dress I’m wearing above is a perfect example — thin vertical stripes, a defined waist, and pintucked pleats all working together to create a beautiful, feminine hourglass shape. (And yes, I have it in black too. When you find something that works, you buy it in multiples!)

Polka dots, small florals, fine geometric patterns — all great options that keep things looking refined and proportional.

Larger, oversized prints do the opposite. They add visual volume and draw attention to the areas you may be trying to minimize. When in doubt, scale down.

(Vacation exception fully granted. Giant palm leaves and bold tropical florals? Absolutely. Different rules apply when you’re somewhere fabulous.)

No need to wear something so tight you can barely breathe, it’s about creating a smooth, flattering base.

Not all volume works against you — in fact, the right volume in the right place can be incredibly slimming.

The stunning dress (pictured above) that I wore to a Mozart concert in Salzburg, Austria is a perfect example. That dramatic, structured full skirt does something really beautiful — it makes my waist and legs look so much smaller by comparison. Volume creates contrast, and contrast creates shape.

A full skirt can also be a game-changer if you carry weight in your hips, butt, or thighs. Rather than clinging or compressing, it gracefully skims over those areas and creates a more balanced, proportional silhouette.

But it’s also working hard behind the scenes — breaking up patterns, creating waist definition, and making you look both slimmer and taller in one move.

And here’s the part most women don’t think about: strategic layering can actually sculpt your silhouette. A well-placed jacket with structure visually slims and narrows the sides. Menopause middle? No problem. Add a jacket.

If you have a fuller bust, a cropped layer can also help minimize and balance your proportions beautifully — creating that long, lean line from shoulder to hem.
