In Just Five Days, ‘Sinners’ Has Become One of the Highest-Grossing Horror Movies of All-Time

Having exceeded expectations in its domestic box office debut, director Ryan Coogler‘s Sinners is breaking new ground mere days into its theatrical run. The genre-bending vampire film has passed the $50 million mark domestically, and in just five days of release, has become one of the 100 highest-grossing horror films in domestic box office history. Sinners achieved this milestone on Monday, after grossing a handsome $7 million and pushing its running domestic total to $55 million. The movie got things going with a $48 million haul in its first weekend, exceeding expectations on the back of tremendous reviews and audience reception.

Its $55 million haul makes it the 100th highest-grossing horror film in domestic box office history. Some of the movies immediately ahead of it are the original Saw, Escape Room, and Zack Snyder‘s Dawn of the Dead remake. Sinners passed hits such as Insidious, Final Destination, and The Black Phone as it made its way towards the top 100 list. Globally, the film has grossed over $70 million so far, and will hope to hop past the coveted $100 million milestone this weekend. Produced on a reported budget of $90 million, Sinners is being seen as a major win for original filmmaking, at a time when the industry is dominated by sequels, remakes, and other IP-centric properties.

For instance, the highest-grossing Hollywood film of the year is A Minecraft Movie, based on the popular video game franchise. Sinners reunites Coogler with his longtime collaborator, actor Michael B. Jordan. They’ve worked together on all of Coogler’s movies, beginning with the breakout indie hit Fruitvale Station. Jordan also played the titular role in Creed, which spawned two sequels, and appeared as the villainous Killmonger in Black Panther. Sinners is Coogler’s first original film since Fruitvale Station over a decade ago. He has also struck a unique deal with Warner Bros. that will see the film’s rights return to him after 25 years.

‘Sinners’ Is Among the Best-Reviewed Wide Releases Ever

The movie opened to near-unanimous praise from critics and audiences. It has earned the best Rotten Tomatoes score of Coogler’s career — it’s sitting at a “certified fresh” 98% approval rating — in addition to a 97% audience score. In her review, Collider’s Emma Kiely described Sinners as “an electric film sparkling with energy and passion,” and wrote that “Coogler takes everything he has honed over the past 10 years and crafts a spectacle hoisted up by exceptional visual storytelling.” The movie is being given the special treatment by Warner Bros., who released it in a handful of locations equipped to screen it in IMAX 70mm. Sinners also features Hailee Steinfeld, Delroy Lindo, Omar Miller, and Jack O’Connell in supporting roles. You can watch the film in theaters, and stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
