‘King of Kings’ Accepts Its Holy Crown With Immaculate CinemaScore and Rotten Tomatoes Audience Ratings
Even as the fifth season of The Chosen continues drawing audiences to theaters for the third week in a row — the season was released in three theatrical installments — the faith-based audience has another title to choose from this week. The animated film The King of Kings, created by a team of South Korean filmmakers, debuted amid a host of releases such as Drop, Warfare, The Amateur, and The Chosen: Last Supper – Part 3. It’s poised to deliver a solid box office debut on the back of mostly positive reviews, and near-immaculate audience reception. Like most faith-based projects, The King of Kings seems to have struck a chord with its core demographic, and it’ll hope that this translates into major box office returns leading up to Easter weekend.
The film currently sits at a borderline “fresh” 63% approval rating on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, although, more impressively, its audience score is a far superior 97%. By comparison, all three installments of The Chosen’s fifth season scored 99% audience scores on Rotten Tomatoes. However, according to the polling platform CinemaScore, The King of Kings is the top-rated film of the week. It earned a perfect A+ grade on the platform, signaling unanimous praise. By comparison, Warfare earned an A-, while The Amateur earned a B+.
The King of Kings follows Charles Dickens — yes, the very same — as he gets transported to the era of Jesus Christ along with his son. The movie is loosely based on Dickens’ “The Life of Our Lord,” and is directed by Seong-ho Jang. It registered the best-ever pre-sales for the indie distributor Angel Studios, which specializes in faith-based projects, and occasionally peddles irresponsible super-spreaders of misinformation. The King of Kings is exceeding expectations with around $18 million for the weekend; the chart is expected to be topped by last week’s A Minecraft Movie.
‘The King of Kings’ Features an A-List Roster of Voice Actors
Joining Oscar Isaac, who voices Jesus in the film, are a host of popular actors such as Kenneth Branagh, Uma Thurman, Mark Hamill, Pierce Brosnan, Roman Griffin Davis, Ben Kingsley, and Forest Whitaker. The King of Kings’ 97% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes is higher than the 95% scored by Pixar’s Inside Out 2 last year, and by The Super Mario Bros. Movie the year before that. However, that’s marginally lower than the 99% audience score held by this year’s Ne Zha 2, which recently became the highest-grossing animated movie ever made, with a total global gross of over $2.1 billion. You can watch The King of Kings in theaters, and stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
