Lena Waithe, Brandon Flynn Featured in LGBTQ Doc ‘Reclaim the Flag’ (EXCLUSIVE)

Lena Waithe and Brandon Flynn are among those who will be featured in “Reclaim the Flag,” a 30-minute short about the American flag.

The film, directed by designer Alexis Bittar and produced by Oscar winner Bruce Cohen, examines how the flag can be reclaimed as a symbol of unity for all Americans, with a focus on the LGBTQ community.

“Reclaim,” premiering July 17, features interviews with bold-faced names from Hollywood, politics, media and fashion, including Lena Waithe, Gus Kenworthy, Jonathan Capehart, Marc Jacobs, Bill T. Jones, Jim Parsons, George Takei, Gottmik, Gigi Goode, Cheyenne Jackson, Brandon Flynn, Harper Steele, Isaac Mizrahi, John Cameron Mitchell, Paul Tazewell, Raquel Willis, Josh Wood, Jenna Lyons, Justin Tranter and Marc Jacobs.

The trailer for the film, released Tuesday morning, opens with the words and a voiceover asking, “What does the American flag symbolize to you?”

Waithe says in the trailer, “Depending on how the United States feels about you, will depend on how you feel about the flag.”

“How do I feel about the United States?” asks songwriter and producer Tranter. “She’s messy, she’s scary, she’s beautiful.”

Flynn worries in the clip: “The erasure of a lot of queer progress [is] happening right before our eyes.”

“Will & Harper” star and comedy writer Harper Steele says, “I feel like we’re under attack right now.”

Content creator Matt Bernstein says with a laugh, “If I’m on Grindr and I see and American flag emoji in somebody’s bio, I think that is a Republican.”

“Over the past decade, the American flag has increasingly become a symbol of division. I wanted to make a documentary about reclaiming it for all Americans — by bringing together 50 leaders from the LGBTQ+ community to share their reflections and hopes,” Bittar said. “Speaking with a historically marginalized group offered a powerful lens for shaping a blueprint toward actionable steps to reclaim the flag.”

Cohen added, “We’re deeply grateful to the extraordinary group of artists and activists who took part in this film. The ideas they brought to light — both visionary and practical, provocative and heartfelt — have the power to spark real conversations and, hopefully, help us begin healing as a community and country.”

Jason Weinberg and Mickalene Thomas also serve as executive producers with along with co-producers Arianne Phillips and Frank Godchaux and associate producer Steve Madden.

The film will debut on “Reclaim the Flag” YouTube channel on July 17 at 12 p.m. ET.
