Man uncovers brother-in-law’s white lie about gift he “always wears”

When it comes to gift-giving, there’s always a risk that the recipient isn’t as thrilled about their present as they claim to be.

One man on TikTok has gone viral after exposing the subtle proof that his brother-in-law might have been stretching the truth about how much he loves the sweater he got him last Christmas. Since the video was posted, it has received nearly 1 million likes and more than 2,500 comments.

“Got my brother-in-law this sweater last year for Christmas and he tells me he wears it all the time,” the man wrote in the caption. “Something tells me he’s not speaking the truth.”

In the video, the man revealed that upon closer inspection, something didn’t add up—the size sticker was still attached to the front of the sweater, meaning it probably hadn’t been worn much at all.

The revelation has sparked a wave of comments from viewers who could relate to the experience of giving a well-intended gift, only to realize it’s barely been used.

“My mom cleaned out her closet and she said, ‘Here, I think these heels are yours, they’re not mine cause I’ve never worn them.’ I gave them to her for Christmas,” one person wrote, adding that she then reminded her mother she had gifted them to her. “She just looked at me blank-faced—she slowly took them back.”

“One time, I got my mom an engraved compact mirror and it sat on our kitchen table for like a year,” another shared. “Then she was like, ‘Is this yours? It isn’t mine,’ I was like dude, I bought that FOR YOU.”

While stories about mothers took up a large portion of the comments section, others chimed in with their experiences of men skirting around the truth about wearing gifts.

“I once saw a man with the size sticker on his jeans, kindly let his wife know when he was in the bathroom, and she said he knows, he likes to wear it,” one person wrote.

“My father-in-law got out the shoes we got him last Christmas,” another wrote. “We thought he returned them, but then we saw him wearing them. He told us he just took them out of the box.”

Ultimately, whether with experiences of their own or not, commenters sympathized with the creator’s defeated attempt at getting something his brother-in-law liked. Some offered a more optimistic explanation, though.

“You’re right,” the creator responded to a comment offering the suggestion that maybe his brother-in-law preferred the sticker on. “It’s probably the new style.”
