New Movies Out Now in Theaters: What to See This Week

Following the record-breaking opening weekend for “A Minecraft Movie,” a new slate of blockbusters and indie films are hoping to drum up excitement in April about what 2025 has to offer in the cinema landscape.

Starting with the weekend’s wide releases, Ryan Coogler’s “Sinners” is drumming up interest with his original vampire movie that stars Michael B. Jordan in dueling roles, alongside Hailee Steinfeld, Li Jun Li, Omar Benson Miller and Jack O’Connell. In his positive review for Variety, Owen Gleiberman described it as a “lush, enveloping, historical, phantasmagorical social-panorama from-dusk-till-dawn vampire film” that gets to “the wages of sin in Black America.”

Andrew Ahn’s “The Wedding Banquet” is a remake of Ang Lee’s 1993 classic about two queer couples who propose a fake marriage in order to help Lee (Lily Gladstone) pay for her IVF treatment. In addition to “Killers of the Flower Moon” star Gladstone, the cast includes Kelly Marie Tran, Joan Chen, Bowen Yang, Han Gi-chan and Oscar winner Youn Yuh-jung. The film has received positive reviews since its Sundance premiere back in January.

Over in limited release, David Cronenberg’s “The Shrouds” is finally coming to theaters nearly a year after its Cannes premiere. Cronenberg’s personal film is about a grieving widow who invents a new form of technology to communicate with his late wife. “Pride & Prejudice” is also celebrating its 20th anniversary with a limited re-release. Additional titles include the body horror film “The Ugly Stepsister” and the fantasy adventure “The Legend of Ochi,” which is being distributed by A24.

Check back each week to find the latest releases in theaters, from major wide releases to niche independent titles.
