Political Documentary ‘Sudan, Remember Us’ Acquired by Watermelon Pictures (EXCLUSIVE)

Watermelon Pictures has acquired the U.S. distribution rights to the political documentary “Sudan, Remember Us,” Variety can exclusively announce.

The deal follows the film’s premiere at Venice Film Festival and screenings at Toronto International Film Festival and DOC NYC. Directed by Hind Meddeb, “Sudan, Remember Us” follows resistance movements across the Arab world following the 2019 Sudanese revolution. Meddeb tracks artists, activists and a youth-led movement, capturing how “the country tragically slid back into war,” according to an official synopsis.

“Hind Meddeb’s urgent, defiant portrait of Sudan’s creative and revolutionary youth is exactly the kind of fearless storytelling we exist to champion,” Watermelon Pictures co-founder Hamza Ali said in a statement.

In his Variety review out of TIFF, critic Murtada Elfadl described the film as “a thoughtful and empathetic look at how collective hope can mobilize a whole generation.” He went on to complement the cinematography and how “the camera is also attuned to the locations, giving the capital city Khartoum its individuality as a place with a rich history that nurtured these smart eloquent people.”

The film is produced by Echo Films and Blue Train Films and co-produced by My Way Production Tounès. Producers include Abel Nahmias, Michel Zana and Alice Ormières, with Taoufik Guiga co-producing.

Since being founded in April 2024, the Palestinian-owned Watermelon Pictures has released the Oscar shortlisted “From Ground Zero,” political drama “The Teacher” and timely documentary “The Encampments” in theaters.

The acquisition deal was negotiated by Hamza Ali on behalf of Watermelon Pictures and Margot Hervée on behalf of Totem Films. “Sudan, Remember Us” is set to release theatrically this summer in North America.
