“Ruth Carter was working on the Blade movie that ended up not shooting — which I think they’re still going to make. At one point, that film was going to deal with the past around the same era as Sinners,” Sev revealed, referring to the delayed Marvel vampire slayer movie.
Mahershala Ali was cast to play the titular character, first played on the big screen by Wesley Snipes, in 2019. The movie has been delayed numerous times with several changes in the production team.
Sev revealed in the interview that Ruth was able to use her connections to the delayed Blade film to get access to the unused costumes.
“She happened to have a warehouse full of period-appropriate clothes, and it was like, ‘Yo, we got to shoot this movie, like, tomorrow,’” Sev recalled during the interview. “And Marvel was generous enough and kind enough to let us basically purchase it at price.”
Sev went on to explain that the extra costumes purchased from Marvel’s stash of Blade outfits were primarily used for background characters, not for the main stars of the film.
He shared during the interview, “A lot of the background actors in our movie are wearing those clothes.”
