Sonay Hoffman & Tommy Benjamin Set Medical Drama ‘God Complex’ At Amazon As Duo Launches Story Well Pictures

EXCLUSIVE: Amid a resurgence of medical dramas across broadcast and streaming, Amazon is taking a stab at the genre with God Complex. The project, now in development, comes from Found co-showrunner Sonay Hoffman and Tommy Benjamin, who have partnered to launch a company, Story Well Pictures. They previously worked together on the ABC crime anthology series American Crime.

God Complex centers on Gabriel, a revered neurosurgeon who sacrifices himself to a grieving gunman denied care. This act of heroism shatters his marriage to a compassionate OB-GYN who can’t forgive his recklessness. Now separated, they must navigate the fallout—professional, personal, and political—while saving lives in a broken system that nearly cost them everything.

Hoffman and Brnjamin will executive produce through Story Well Pictures, with Hoffman servinf as showrunner.

God Complex is looking to join such recent medical drama breakouts as HBO Max’s The Pitt, Fox’s Doc, NBC’s Brilliant Minds and CBS’ Watson, with streamers seeking a signature drama in the space. HBO Max found it in The Pitt; Netflix recently tried with Pulse.

Hoffman most recently was a co-showrunner on NBC’s Found alongside creator Nkechi Okoro Carroll. She previously was an executive producer on ABC drama For Life and also worked on USA Network’s Pearson, Marvel’s Daredevil for Netflix, FX’s American Crime Story and ABC’s American Crime, for which she shared a 2016 WGA Award nomination. Hoffman is repped by CAA, Golenberg and Co., and Myman Greenspan Fineman.

Benjamin is coming off a six-year tenure at John Legend’s Get Lifted Film, most recently as VP of Scripted and Documentaries, sharing in a Children’s and Family Emmy Award for the HBO Max documentary Stand Up And Shout: Songs From A Philly High School. Previously, Benjamin held a position at Michael McDonald’s Stearns Castle and worked on such shows as ABC’s American Crime, Showtime’s Guerrila, and Netflix’s Monarca.

Hoffman is repped by CAA, Pivot Artists Group, and Myman Greenspan Fineman Fox Rosenberg & Light.
