‘The Chosen’ Attains Heavenly Box Office Heights Ahead of Easter Sunday
It was all building towards this weekend, and if things work out (as they mostly have), the folks over at Sony will be heaving a sigh of relief because they’re planning something similar with their ambitious four-part Beatles series, due out in 2028. Beginning three weeks ago, Fathom Events debuted three separate installments of the faith-based television series The Chosen‘s fifth season in theaters. Titled The Chosen: Last Supper, the “trilogy” has since grossed a combined total of over $40 million, pushing the franchise past massive global box office milestones.
The Chosen: Last Supper is being screened in its entirety now, aiming for major returns over the Easter weekend. The first batch of episodes, released theatrically as The Chosen: Last Supper – Part 1, have grossed a total of over $20 million worldwide, emerging as the top-grossing installment of the series. The Chosen: Last Supper – Part 2 has generated over $11 million, while The Chosen: Last Supper – Part 3 is nearly about to pass the $10 million mark. Starring Jonathan Roumie as Jesus, the franchise began its theatrical journey with Christmas with the Chosen: The Messengers, which grossed around $13 million in 2021. In total, the series has generated over $110 million. A sixth season is expected to land in a couple of years.
In addition to its box office success, which should encourage other studios to experiment with releasing shows on the big screen, The Chosen series is also a glowing example of targeted marketing delivering an incredible audience response. Faith-based audiences tend to be exceptionally enthusiastic in expressing their appreciation, which can be observed in Last Supper – Part 1 and Last Supper – Part 2 holding near-perfect 99% audience scores on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes. Last Supper – Part 3 is the lowest-rated of the bunch, but with a still-amazing 98% score.
‘The Chosen’ Is Facing Off Against ‘The King of Kings’
The Chosen: Last Supper trilogy grossed a combined total of around $750,000 on Good Friday, which doesn’t exactly bode well for Easter. By comparison, the faith-based animated offering The King of Kings grossed over $6 million on Good Friday, and will hit the $45 million mark domestically by Sunday. The movie, which features Oscar Isaac as the voice of Jesus along with a host of other big stars, is now “verified hot” on Rotten Tomatoes, thanks to a 97% audience score. You can watch all three installments of The Chosen: Last Supper and The King of Kings in theaters, and stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
