The Dark Knight Takes on Mr. Freeze in the Next ‘New Batman Adventures’ Figure Wave From McFarlane Toys
Over 30 years later, Batman: The Animated Series remains one of the best interpretations of the famous DC hero. Whether it was the “dark deco” world, the mature writing or the handful of tragic villains, there was something for fans to marvel at every week. That bled into BTAS second iteration, The New Batman Adventures, with updated character designs and storylines that never shied away from taking risks. Now McFarlane Toys is continuing the show’s legacy with their latest wave of action figures.
A part of McFarlane’s six-inch scale DC Direct line, the next wave for The New Batman Adventures includes three figures. This includes a silver version of Kevin Conroy’s Batman, Mr. Freeze and Etrigan the Demon. While this Batsuit has gotten a few figures from McFarlane in the past, Mr. Freeze and Etrigan are a first for the New Batman Adventures series. Freeze is seen in his sleeker black-and-blue redesign, while Etrigan is ready for a fight in his bulky attire. This batch of figures will be available for pre-order on Thursday, April 10th at select retailers.
A Heart of Ice and a Heroic Demon
While Mr. Freeze’s most celebrated appearances in BTAS were the episode “Heart of Ice” and the 1998 direct-to-video film Batman & Mr. Freeze: Subzero, the character would return for The New Batman Adventures in a much more chilling way. In the episode “Cold Comfort,” it was revealed that Nora recovered from her condition, but she didn’t accept Victor Freeze back into her life. That caused the villain to spiral and go after/destroy things that people held most precious to them. Freeze’s own frosty illness had also gotten worse, as the only thing that remains of his body is his head. His helmet has spider legs that help him get around, and it’s one of the saddest moments in the show’s history.
As for Etrigan, the hero would only appear in one New Batman Adventures episode titled “The Demon Within.” In this mystical episode, Batman and Robin team up with the cursed demon to take down Kiaron, who stole the branding iron that cursed Jason Blood, aka Etrigan. While it dealt with the dark arts and was a less grounded story than was usually told in BTAS, “The Demon Within” is one of the show’s more fun and rewatchable missions. It also helped showcase that series’ new, more streamlined, animation style with some memorable sequences of horror.
