Tom Selleck used to love tearing around his 63-acre ranch on his ATV, but he’s taking life a whole easier these days, according to a source, who exclusively tells Closer it’s a great relief to his loved ones — especially doting wife of 38 years Jillie Mack.
“Tom’s finally taking his foot off the gas, and it’s a huge comfort to everyone who cares about him,” the insider explains. “For years, he was go-go-go around the ranch, tearing around on his ATV, and taking on projects like he was still in his 40s, but these days, he’s embracing a much more low-key routine.”
After the Magnum P.I. alum’s latest network role on Blue Bloods ended in December 2024, the 80-year-old actor has been caught between his desire to continue pursuing his career at all costs and his family’s wishes for him to take it a little easier now that he’s free from the hectic filming schedule of a series regular.
According to the source, Jillie, 67, who the iconic actor wed in 1987, was the main force behind wanting her husband to take load off and enjoy the time off.
“Jillie is grateful he’s listening to his body and slowing down, she’s been urging him for years to slow down and be more mindful.”
A second source previously dished to Closer that the transition from full-time working actor to homebody was a bit difficult for Tom and he kept trying to furiously keep up the pace by laboring on his propery. “He slowed way down since the show ended, which has been a big adjustment for him and a little tough, but thankfully he has Jillie to help keep his spirits up,” that source said. “She’s thrilled to have him home more, and he’s certainly grateful to have more time to go on long walks with her and cuddle up on the couch.”
Now that he’s finally accepted a slower pace of life, the first source adds his wife couldn’t be happier she now has more time to spend with the iconic actor.
“She worried a lot about him overdoing it on the ranch and hurting himself. It’s such a weight off her mind to see him easing up.”
The couple share one daughter, 36-year-old Hannah Margaret Selleck, who is just as fond of ranch life as her dad. An accomplished equestrian show jumper, Hannah now operates Descanso Farm, her boutique training operation based in California, and successfully competes at the grand prix level. A life out in the sun caring for his ranch is something that Tom is still reluctant to fully give up.
“He still gets out and does what he loves, but now it’s more gardening and feeding the horses instead of racing around on machinery,” the insider adds. Ultimately, it’s about getting in as much time with the family as possible, the source notes. “Jillie wants him around for as long as possible, she’s very thankful that he’s finally learning to live within his limits.”
