Wanda Sykes Reveals Will Smith Finally Called Her to Apologize for Chris Rock Oscars Slap
Wanda Sykes is looking back at the infamous Oscars slap.
If you forgot, the 61-year-old comedian co-hosted the 2022 Oscars alongside Amy Schumer and Regina Hall. During the ceremony, Will Smith jumped on stage and slapped Chris Rock across the face after he cracked a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith.
In a new interview with Variety, Wanda was asked about hosting the Oscars, which the reporter noted is “usually a career highlight” for stand-up comedians.

When the reporter said that Wanda‘s time on stage with her female co-hosts was “overshadowed” by the slap, Wanda responded, “I mean, I loved working with Regina and Amy. But like you said, it got overshadowed.”
She continued, “People talk to me about that night without even mentioning, ‘Oh yeah, you hosted, right?’ Like I was in the audience or at home, watching TV. But I was there.”
Wanda went on to reveal that Will, 57, eventually called her to apologize for the incident, but the two never spoke.
“He called. I had COVID or a bad cold,” she recalled. “I just texted to say, ‘Hey, I got your message. Thank you. I can’t talk.’ But he did call.”
While appearing on The Ellen DeGeneres Show back in March 2022 shortly after the incident, Wanda said at the time she had not heard from Will, but Chris, 60, did apologize to her when they both attended the Oscars after-party.
Earlier this year, Will referenced slapping Chris on a freestyle rap.
