Why Most Tops Don’t Fit a Fuller Bust — And How to Fix It After 40
The reason you can’t find tops that fit your fuller bust perfectly? They aren’t designed for you.
I know that sounds harsh — but it’s the truth. Most designers create pieces based on what fits the widest range of women collectively, not what flatters your specific shape. They are ultimately trying to create clothes for mass market.
The good news? Once you know what to look for, everything changes. After years of working as a wardrobe stylist, here’s exactly what I learned.
Understanding your body shape is one of the keys to looking more stylish everyday. Learn exactly how to determine your shape in this post.
flattering tops for big busts
I know how hard it is to find tops that work with your fuller bust — but they are out there. Promise. Look for silhouettes that do the heavy lifting for you, create balance, elongate your torso, and define your shape. These are the ones you’ll reach for again and again.
Wrap Front Tops
One of the most universally flattering styles for a fuller bust. The V-neckline adds length, the overlapping fabric minimizes and provides a little forgiveness through the tummy — a bonus for women who carry weight in both areas. Look for a gathered hemline too — it creates even more shape.
V-Neck Styles
Your single best neckline. A V breaks up the chest area, creates vertical lines, and elongates your torso rather than widening it. Simple, classic, and effortless. This neckline is also the most universally flattering for all women.

Scoop Neck & Square Neck Tops
Both open up the chest and draw the eye upward in the most flattering way. One of the most beautiful places on a woman’s body is her décolletage — and a scoop or square neckline frames it perfectly.
Color-Block or Vertical Detail Tops
Color-blocked panels, center seams, subtle stripes — anything that creates a vertical line and draws the eye towards the center of your body will naturally elongates your silhouette. An example is the black and white sweater I’m wearing above.

minimize big busts
Tip #1 | Start With the Right Bra
This is the foundation — everything else builds on it. A properly fitting bra lifts, separates, and supports so your tops fit the way they’re supposed to. If you’ve never been professionally fitted, Nordstrom is a great option. A well-fitted bra can be a game-changer.
You might also consider a minimizer bra if you’re looking for extra smoothing and support.

Tip #2 | Choose Necklines That Draw the Eye Up
V-neck, scoop, square, and soft cowl necks all work beautifully — they create space, show a little skin, and instantly elongate. Avoid turtlenecks and crew necks, which can add visual bulk.
Pro tip: unbuttoning the top two buttons on a blouse creates the same flattering effect as a V-neck.

Tip #3 | Be Strategic About Color, Prints & Design
Dark colors on top (like I’m wearing above) create a natural slimming effect. Vertical stripes elongate. Smaller prints are generally more flattering than large, bold ones (big prints draw the eye right to the chest and add visual weight.)
If you want to wear something bright or eye-catching, put it on the bottom. It draws the eye down and beautifully balances your proportions.
And when in doubt, you might also want to avoid design details that add volume on top — ruffles, puff sleeves, and heavy embellishments all can work against you.

Tip #4 | Avoid Chunky Knits or Over-Sized Silhouettes
It’s tempting to hide in an oversized top — but it can actually work against you, sometimes making your whole upper body appear larger.
Instead, look for a more tailored fit and a silhouette that skims your shape.

Tip #5 | Yes, You Can Wear a Button-Down
The button-down is a wardrobe staple — but for a fuller bust, it can be one of the biggest style challenges. The most difficult issue? Gaping buttons. Sound familiar?
The fix is simpler than you think. You can go about it a couple of ways:
- Size up for a slightly looser fit across the chest. You can always have it tailored for a perfect fit around the waist.
- Try a specialty button-down like The Jetset Icon, which has double buttons at the bust to prevent gaping. It’s also wrinkle resistant — perfect for travel. And don’t forget to leave the top two buttons unbuttoned to create that flattering V-neckline.

dress with confidence
Here’s the truth — your body isn’t the problem. Ill-fitting clothes are. Once you know what to look for, everything shifts. Shopping gets easier, getting dressed gets faster, and you walk out the door with an extra spring in your step, knowing that your style reflects the beautiful woman that you are.
